Community & Service
Island Academy is supported by the Parent Organization, which organizes events and projects that bring home and school closer together. Students are actively involved in annual fundraising events that allow the families of Island Academy to give back to the community. The Annual Christmas Shoebox appeal, for example, collects over 40 shoeboxes for less fortunate children at Care Project, Hanna Thomas Hospital, the School for the Blind, and the School for the Deaf. Our students also undertake various initiatives to help make a positive impact, both locally and globally. In past years, proceeds from student organized dances and candy grams have gone to Haiti after the earthquake, to St. Lucia after a hurricane, and to the young men at the Antigua Boys Training School. Students also actively participate in food collections for World Food Day. These food hampers are given to the elderly and the homeless. Students also participate in the many campaigns to keep Antigua clean through beach cleanups.
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
CAS is one of the three essential elements in every student’s IB Diploma Programme experience. CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning. At the same time, it provides an important counterbalance to the academic pressures of the rest of the IB Diploma Programme. A good CAS programme should be both challenging and enjoyable, a personal journey of self-discovery. Each individual student has a different starting point, and therefore different goals and needs, but for many their CAS activities include experiences that are profound and life changing.
* The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows.
* Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
* Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the IB Diploma Programme.
* Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student and that respects the rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved.
