Through both our school curriculum and our after school programme, Island Academy gives students a solid grounding in Physical Education and exposure to a number of competitive sports. Benefitting from a dedicated PE teacher from Kinder through to CSEC, a large athletics field, basketball court and diverse equipment, we have excellent facilities and training.
Sport is a compulsory part of the curriculum from Kinder all the way to Grade 13 and a compulsory CSEC. Not only do students learn the fundamentals of organised sports, but also how to improve their physical and mental wellbeing, encouraging a lifetime of healthy habits.
Within classes, we cover cricket, tennis, football, athletics, basketball and attack and defence games. Each term we hold interhouse competitions in selected sports such as Football, Volleyball and Athletics. These allow students to show their skill level and learn the values of sportsmanship, teamwork and friendly competition. We believe that all students should have an equal opportunity to participate regardless of ability.
In addition to classes during the school day, Island Academy offers several after school sports clubs. These include Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Dance and Athletics.
Since the school started, IA has taken part in national interschool competitions organised by the Ministry of Education. Our students have participated in football, basketball, cricket, track and field, volleyball and skipping competitions . On several occasions we have brought home silverware to the school and have many top finishers in the various events. Most recently both our boys and girls teams are winners of the national Volleyball competition and a number of them are now going on to train for the National Youth Team.
Students from IA have also gone on to represent Antigua at the regional and international level; in sports including swimming, sailing, tennis, football, athletics, basketball, kiteboarding, equestrian and gymnastics.
