Mission
Our mission is to offer a world-class education that will enable our diverse community of students to function successfully, both academically and socially, in the global community.
School History
Island Academy International was founded in 2001 to offer students in Antigua and Barbuda an alternative world-class educational opportunity. The founders envisioned a school that would cater to the needs of Antiguan and Barbudan students, as well as those from our expatriate community.
The school was established in the South of the Island and opened its doors in September 2001. The goal was to establish an internationally accredited school that was intellectually rigorous, physically active, culturally engaged, and civically responsible, and would prepare its students for access to any university in the world. The curriculum was developed based on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and in 2009, after much planning and hard work, Island Academy was approved as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme School.
In September 2009, Island Academy moved to a new purpose-built facility on 15 acres of hillside on the outskirts of Buckley’s Village, in the centre of Antigua. Today it has grown to a student population of more than 300 from Kindergarten through to Grade 13. It is co-educational and is known for the diversity, with students from over 15 countries as well as those born in Antigua and Barbuda.
Island Academy is one of 18 schools in the Caribbean that offers the IBDP, which is recognized by universities around the world. It is an accredited K-13 school and is also accredited with the Ministry of Education of Antigua and Barbuda.
Not only does the school consistently achieve a high level of academic performance, it also focuses on developing creative, sporting and community aspects. From our dedicated art and ceramics programme to our musical performances and sports teams, our students are encouraged to develop as rounded individuals with a diverse set of skills. Above all, Island Academy students are expected to live up to the school’s mission statement, and develop within the school community a sense of shared responsibility among students, staff and parents.
